Description
"Gateway to the Underworld"
A red-orange glow is seen through a hole, known as a skylight, in the ceiling of an active lava tube in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Just a dozen or so feet below, a large river of intensely hot molten lava flows underground from the Kilauea volcano on it's way to the Pacific Ocean. The black lava that formed the ceiling of this lava tube, a type of basalt lava known as pahoehoe, created interesting rope-like patterns as it cooled just a few weeks earlier.
