The Painted Dunes is a surreal landscape of colorful oxidized volcanic rock formations dotted with pine trees in California's lesser-visited Lassen Volcanic National Park. From a high vantage point on a nearby cinder cone it is possible to fully appreciate this bizzare landscape. The bright colors are the result of ash and pumice falling on hot lava flows during an eruption believed to have taken place in the 1600's.
