"Queen of the Arctic"
A polar bear stands upright on a vivid blue iceberg in sea ice near Svalbard, in the far Norwegian Arctic.
In 7 days of searching the waters around Svalbard aboard a small ship, we found a total of 16 polar bears. Most of them were pixel bears: more than 1/2 mile away on fast ice that we couldn't get closer to without destroying the precious little ice they need to hunt seals on. This one, however, was in ice that had already broken up making approaching easier. We were in the last 5 miles of sea ice we would sail through during the entire journey and had basically given up hope for good bear sightings.
