A polar bear scratches her back on a large blue iceberg floating in the sea near Svalbard in the Norwegian Arctic. About 3,000 polar bears live in the area around the Norwegian Arctic territory of Svalbard at nearly 80 degrees north. They depend heavily on the sea ice, where they spend much of their time hunting for their primary diet of ringed seals. The significant declines in the extent and thickness of sea ice in recent years are concerning to the future survival of this species.
