Description
"An Unexpected Landscape"
A bird's eye view of Mount Rainier and Spirit Lake seen from the crater rim of Mount Saint Helens, Washington. On May 18, 1980, Mount Saint Helens famously rumbled to life in the largest and most destructive volcanic eruption in US history. The blast, triggered by a M 5.1 earthquake, was heard nearly 700 miles away. The eruption instantly reduced the mountain's height by nearly 1300ft and left a crater nearly a mile wide. The lava dome from the 1980 eruption of the volcano, still largely covered in snow from the winter, is partially seen in the lower left. Logs from trees blown over from the eruption still float in Spirit Lake to this day.
