Description
Early morning fog and mist drift through the UNESCO World Heritage site of Machu Picchu high above the Urubamba River in the Cusco Region of Peru. It is generally believed that this archaeological site was originally built by the Incas as a royal estate in the 1400's before being abandoned with the arrival of the Spanish. It was unknown to the outside world until 1911.
Arriving at sunrise before the crowds of tourists, these foggy and misty conditions were perfect for conveying the mystery and intrigue of this famous lost city. And unlike many photographs of this iconic place, this particular angle allows you to see all the way down to the river, nearly 1,500 feet below.
