Description
"A Gathering of Kings"
As many as 100,000 king penguins nest under the backdrop of jagged glaciated mountains on this beach on the remote island of South Georgia near Antarctica. The spectacular landscape dotted with tussock grasses and filled with penguins and seals is unlike anything found anywhere else on Earth. The brown chicks, about 11 months old in this photograph, must still depend on their parents to bring them fish from the ocean.
Accessible only by a four day ship sailing from Tierra del Fuego in South America, this remote sub-Antarctic island has a permanent population of only 16 scientists. Of historical significance, this is where Sir Ernest Shackleton landed to successfully organize the rescue of his doomed Antarctica expedition in 1916.
