Description
The famous red or vermilion torii gates of the Fushimi Inari shrine outside of Kyoto, Japan. Approximately 1,000 of these gates, most adorned with the names of their donors, span several kilometers of trails over a mountain also named Inari. The custom to donate a torii began spreading from the Edo period (1603 – 1868) to have a wish come true or in gratitude for a wish that came true.
