Description
A view from the bottom of Mooney Falls, one of several incredible turquoise blue-green waterfalls on the Havasupai Reservation in the Grand Canyon. These famous waterfalls on Havasu Creek, surrounded by red sandstone cliffs, derive their color from the high calcium carbonate concentration in the water. This dissolved mineral content also creates unique travertine (limestone) structures on the cliffs and in the water. One of the most iconic locations in Arizona, access to Supai and these nearby waterfalls is tightly controlled. The only way to get here is by helicopter, horse/mule, or a more than 10 mile one-way hike down into the canyon. Reaching the bottom of Mooney Falls literally requires scaling a more than 80-plus high cliff on a series of rickety wooden stairs and ropes and is not for the faint of heart.
